It was so dark inside the fish that the small tin soldier couldn't see anything. He thought of his home and the pretty dancer, but he was brave and did not cry. He held his gun in his hand and lay very straight.
The fish swam along the drain. After a long time it got out of the drain and reached the sea.

A fisherman was fishing there. He caught the fish with a hook and tried to pull it out of the water. The fish jumped about and the tin soldier fell on one side and then on the other. He was quite tired. At last the fish was quiet. It was dead.
The fisherman took it to a fish shop and sold it.

"Where am I going?" the tin soldier thought in the dark. He lay still in the fish all day. Then somebody bought the fish and took it home.
The fish was put on the kitchen table, and a servant cut it open with a knife. "Look!" she shouted. "It's the missing tin soldier." The tin soldier looked at her face and knew her at once. The small tin soldier looked around and found that he was in the same house again.

The servant took him upstairs to the children's room. When the children saw him, they were all surprised and shouted, "The small tin soldier's come back! The small tin soldier's come back!" The small boy was especially glad to see his tin soldier again.
The small tin soldier was also very happy to see the children again. The children put him on the table together with his twenty-four brothers. They were very glad that their brother had come back safe and sound. The black dog was there, too, but the small tin soldier looked straight at the pretty paper house and at the beautiful dancer.

She was dancing in front of her house. She did not stop dancing. She did not look at him, either. But the small tin soldier loved her more than before. "She's never looked at me," he said, "but I love her very much.
Two of the children quarreled in the evening. One of them was very angry. He took the small tin soldier and threw him into the fire. The black dog was so happy that he laughed and jumped. What a cruel dog!

Soon the small tin soldier was very hot. His black fur cap, his red coat, and his blue trousers began to burn. But in the fire he stood very straight with his gun in his hand, and with his eyes fixed on the beautiful dancer. Then she looked at him!
At that moment somebody opened the door, and the wind blew in. The wind caught the beautiful dancer and took her up into the air. She flew like a small blue bird straight into the fire. She lay beside the small tin soldier, but in a second she burned up and was not there anymore.

The servant cleaned the fireplace the next morning. She found the tin flower from the beautiful dancer's hair in the ashes. It was quite black. She did not find the tin soldier anywhere in the fireplace. She did find a small lump of tin by the tin flower. And the lump was in the shape of a heart.
