The Lying King(b)

After Doris told her mother that the dog broke the vase, her mother calmed down and all three of them cleaned up the mess. Joe thanked Doris for not getting him into trouble. Their mother overheard what Joe said. She looked at Doris and saw she had a small bump on her head. "What happened to your head, Doris?" her mother asked. To cover up her lie, Doris said that when the vase broke, a small piece of it must have hit her head.

Their mother then turned to Joe, who was watching her tensely. She asked, "Why is the baseball over there instead of in the garage?" Joe stuttered as he tried to explain, but his mother got angry before he could finish. "Why did you two lie to me? I hate lying!"

Doris again ran up to her room with tears in her eyes. Joe confessed that it was his fault because he broke the vase and asked Doris to lie for him. Just then, Doris came running down the stairs. "I'm sorry, Mother, but Joe is the lying king in our family." Joe and his mother both looked at each other. At that moment, they couldn't help but laugh, because they knew that Doris' favorite movie was The Lion King. After a long talk with both children, Mrs. Jones felt confident they understood how even a little lie could lead to big problems.
