Weight training while you’re dieting helps build a strong, lean body. A study compared a group of overweight women who went on a diet without exercising with another group who worked out with weights while they dieted. All of the women lost weight, but those who lifted weights had leaner bodies than those who didn’t. Weight training adds to a lean body both by using more fat for energy and by building muscle strength.
Weight training can be as simple as working out with a pair of dumbbells at home or as formal as a full routine on health club equipment. Check what’s available before you decide. Whether you lift weights at home or at a club, be careful. Dropping a weight on your foot or tearing a muscle is not a pleasant experience.
