Cereal is a basic food that provides plentiful nutrients. Not as good for you are cereals cooked in oil, sprinkled with sugar and coated with frosting —which describes just about all of the cereals pitched at children.
Get back to basics. If you look hard enough, you’ll find at least a handful of sugar-free or low-sugar cereals like oatmeal, bran flakes and shredded wheat. Beware, by the way, of “natural” cereals. A close look at their labels reveals high sugar and oil content, even higher, in fact, than many kids’ brands.
