One pound of fat equals 3,500 calories. To lose one pound, you need to consume 3,500 fewer calories. “That’s a lot!” we can hear you protesting. But you don’t have to do it all in one day. A realistic goal is to lose a pound a week by cutting back just 500 calories a day. One less burger and fries, fewer cookies, low-fat salad dressing, and you’re just about there for the week. Do it again next week and the week after, and you’re well on your way.
You may want to lose more than a pound a week. But studies suggest that if you cut calorie consumption too drastically, your body counteracts the effect of dieting. In other words, don’t try to cut out more than 500 calories from your daily diet.
