Redefining Beauty|

Miss America sets out to redefine beauty after a handicapped woman wins Miss Iowa.

Since the 1920s, the Miss America Pageant has been a showcase of beauty and brilliance featuring some of America's most outstanding young women. Crowns have been awarded to motivational and inspirational women who are the _(1)_ American sweethearts—smart, talented, and of course, nothing short of stunning. When Nicole Kelly walked on stage and was crowned Miss Iowa this past June, the audience was surprised because she was _(2)_. Kelly was born without a left forearm, but she decided early on that if people are going to stare _(3)_ her, they should do it on stage where it is accepted and expected. Kelly says that theater and performing arts gave her an opportunity to build _(4)_, which translates into humor on stage. Her comical and _(5)_ personality immediately won over the crowd, and apparently the judges.

Kelly's disability has never _(6)_ her back from anything. She has participated _(7)_ everything from baseball to dance and even diving. In fact, she now also stands as the ultimate inspiration for handicapped people, _(8)_ that they should never let their disability stand in the way of their dreams. It was Kelly's dream to be on stage for the illustrious Miss America Pageant, and it came true in September 2013. Kelly was not the first _(9)_ with a disability, though. Alexis Wineman, who was crowned Miss Montana in 2012, has been living with autism since the age of 11. As the Miss America Pageant _(10)_, it shows that it is not only about bathing suits and evening gowns anymore. Being Miss America means redefining the definition of beauty altogether.
